The UOCis a leader in online education. We are progressive
in our determination to champion open education that
integrates new ideas and new technologies. We champion multilingualism and hold the UNESCO
chair in e-learning.
The UOC relies on the
latest in information and communication technologies. It
offers an educational model based on personalization and full
support of the student, beyond limitations of time and space.
The Food Security Information for
Decision Making Programme aims at enhancing national
capacity to generate, manage, and use food security
information from different sectors for more effective policies
and programmes.
The certificate is
an extension of the FAO’s Distance Learning course in Food
Security Information for Action and is taught in the UOC's
Virtural Campus by an international team of experts with
extensive field experience. The
Food Security Information for Action courses were
developed by the FAO with funding from the European
Union. This certificate will provide students of all
backgrounds with not only a strong and holistic understanding
of food security but also the skills to assess and analyse
food security projects and the tools to put those skills into
action. As a starting
point, we review the concepts and tools used in food
security analysis. We then consider food security and its
relationship to vulnerability, hunger, malnutrition and
poverty. Guidelines on how to interpret and use conceptual
frameworks for analysing food security are also reviewed.
Other topics include: tools to assess information systems
related to food security analysis; designing, writing and
increasing the impact of food security reports in different
contexts, and; commonly used methods to assess food
availability at regional, national and local levels.
Upon
successful completion of the course, students will receive
a FAO-UOC Joint Certificate in Food Security:
Assessment and Action, along with 15 credits
(European Credit Transfer
System). This
certificate is fully transferable to the UOC's Master's in
Food, Society and International Food
Governance.
This programme effectively combines the
FAO's experience and knowledge with the UOC's academic rigour
and technological capacity. With this training you will be
better prepared to undertake and support food security work in
your community.
