Causes of Food Insecurity in the SADC Region

- insufficient investment in agriculture;

- poor access to agricultural inputs and markets;

- low technology development and dissemination; and

- insufficient preparedness to deal with disasters such as droughts and floods.

While cereal production remained almost the same for the years 1990 and 2003 (22,753 and 22,063 metric tonnes respectively), the region's population increased by 40%.
