Distance Learning Unit on Food Security Information Systems and Networks is now available
A new distance learning unit on Food Security Information Systems and Networks is now available at:

This unit introduces and provides guidance in assessing different kinds of information systems related to food security analysis. It is part of a broader food security e-learning curriculum being developed by the EC-FAO Food Security Information for Action Programme.
Each lesson is delivered in an interactive self-paced dynamic learning environment which uses illustrated step-by-step instructions and exercises. A series of:
- job-aids;
- guidelines; and
- case studies which demonstrate real life applications of the concepts and procedures being taught are included.
Content
Specific lessons include:
1. Food Security Information Systems
This lesson describes the objectives and functions of food security information systems. It introduces a basic framework for examining the various components of information systems and how they work together to support the decision making process.
2. The Institutional Context
This lesson examines institutional responsibilities for the collection, analysis and reporting of food security information. It examines the problems that arise from poorly integrated national information systems and considers possible solutions.
3. Improving Food Security Information Systems
This lesson introduces a process for assessing national information systems concerned with food security analysis. It also provides guidelines on how to use the results of the assessment to strengthen food security information systems.
Target Audience
1) Mid-level managers, technical staff, field personnel who are involved in the collection, management, analysis, and reporting of food security information.
2) Planners, policy formulators and programme managers who are involved in monitoring progress in poverty reduction, and meeting food security goals and targets.
About the EC-FAO Programme
The EC-FAO Food Security Information for Action Programme provides 20 countries subject to chronic food insecurity, protracted crises or undergoing rapid economic transformation with the technical assistance and tools to obtain high-quality, timely food security information to formulate more effective anti-hunger policies.
The Distance Learning Component of the EC-FAO Programme
The distance learning element of the Programme will provide a series of e-learning units aimed at improving the collection, management, analysis and dissemination of food security information to improve decision-making.
Topics will include :
- Targeting, Access and Livelihoods;
- Advocacy;
- Collaborative Working;and
- Knowledge Sharing.
A French language version of each unit will be available in due course.
