A new distance learning unit on Food Security Information Systems and Networks is now available at: http://www.foodsec.org/DL This unit introduces and provides guidance in assessing different kinds of information systems related to food security analysis. Specific lessons cover: - the objectives and functions of food security information systems; - the institutional context; and - improving food security information systems. 3. 2007 Global Administrative Unit Layers (GAUL) now available The Global Administrative Unit Layers (GAUL) aims at compiling and disseminating the most reliable spatial information on administrative units for all countries in the world. Recent Training Events Producing Food Security Information Products that Result in Action Maputo, Mozambique 27 November - 1 December 2006 http://www.foodsecinfoaction.org/News/tr_fsip_02.htm Training on Food Security and Consumption Statistics 29 November - 21 December 2006 Three participants from West Bank and Gaza took part in a one-month training course at FAO's recently inaugurated International Demonstration Centre on Food Security and Consumption Statistics. An assessment of food security based on food consumption statistics from the 2005 Palestinian Expenditures and Consumption Survey using the Food Security Statistics Module (FSSM) was performed. At the end of the course, a draft report was presented on the results obtained at national and sub-national levels. The report covers: - the magnitude of food deprivation; - food consumption and expenditures; - inequality in food access due to income; - dietary diversity and sources of calories (carbohydrates, proteins and fats) ; and - food poverty.
