Training on Food Security and Consumption Statistics

29 November - 21 December 2006

Three participants from West Bank and Gaza took part in a one-month training course at FAO's recently inaugurated International Demonstration Centre on Food Security and Consumption Statistics.

An assessment of food security based on food consumption statistics from the 2005 Palestinian Expenditures and Consumption Survey using the Food Security Statistics Module (FSSM) was performed. At the end of the course, a draft report was presented on the results obtained at national and sub-national levels. The report covers:
- the magnitude of food deprivation;
- food consumption and expenditures;
- inequality in food access due to income;
- dietary diversity and sources of calories (carbohydrates, proteins and fats) ; and
- food poverty.
