Food Security Statistics Module
Purpose
The aim of the Food Security Statistical Module (FSM) is to strengthen the statistical analytical capacity of national statistics systems in order to produce policy-relevant food security statistics and indicators.
Target Audience
1. Staff in National Statistical Organizations involved in household surveys concentrating on collecting food consumption data.
2. Staff from other national institutions involved in the management, analysis, and reporting of food security information.
Objectives
- Improve the statistical analysis of food consumption data collected in the national household surveys such as the HBS, HIES, LSMS or CWIQ.
- Derive a suite of food security indicators at the national level and for grouping populations based on demographic, geographic and socio-economic factors of households.
- Provide inputs to the decision-making process to better design policies to alleviate hunger and poverty as expounded in the Millenium Development Goals and World Food Summit targets.
Survey Data Requirements
Recent national household surveys with:
- household food details with corresponding quantity and monetary values;
- household characteristics such as size, composition, geographical regions, location, etc.;and
- head of household characteristics such as gender, age, activity, occupation etc.
Methodological tools
Methodological tools include:
- statistical procedures and software designed to process and aid the analysis of food consumption data from national household surveys; and
- software for the design of tables and charts for reporting results.
