Statistics in applied climatology (SIAC) training course
Nairobi, Kenya and various locations through distance learning

OVERVIEW
| Summary |
Statistics in Applied Climatology (SIAC) training courses organised by the University of Reading give people working with climatic data the skills they need to use historical datasets effectively. With such skills, people can produce relevant, tailored outputs that, in turn, enable end-users to make better decisions.
National Meteorological Services and other bodies routinely record and store climatic data. Appropriate statistical analyses of these data sets provide essential information for agricultural activities, food security and disaster planning. |
| Location |
1. "F-SIAC" is a face-to-face training course usually given in Nairobi.
2.
"E-SIAC"
is an innovative, web-based, e-learning venture which has been developed to make the SIAC training more widely available.
The e-SIAC course is an online, facilitated training activity that takes place over a period of about three months, with a break in the middle of 2, 3 or 4 weeks. It is designed as a part-time activity to be taken in the participant's normal workplace. This makes it cost-effective and accessible to those who may not have the time to attend a residential training course. |
| Target Audience |
SIAC was designed for national meteorological services staff, but the course will be tailored for participants from national food security systems. Countries involved with SIAC under the FAO-EC food security programme include Malawi, RDC, Eritrea, Ethiopia, Somalia and the Sudan. |
| Objectives |
As weather is a crucial factor behind variability in food production, the training will ensure that:
(1) climate-analyses are specifically tuned to the requirements of the national food security community; and
(2) food security analysts and the weather community understand each other and collaborate on a regular basis. |
