2. FAO, World Bank launch safety net training course

The Food and Agriculture Organization and World Bank have launched an introductory e-learning course on social safety nets, aimed at providing an overview of safety net programmes and how they are used in different contexts to reduce poverty and build food security.

3. Cash-for-work in Somalia: linking relief to recovery

In complex emergency situations such as that in Somalia, marred by violence, destitution and famine,FAO has managed to implement a large cash-for- work (CFW) programme. The programme provides emergency relief while building the base for future recovery. This concept note aims at gathering lessons learned from FAO - Somalia's experience in designing and implementing a CFW programme.

4. Summary of the online forum on "Measuring food and nutrition security: what has been your experience?"available online

Participants discussed factors affecting their choice of indicators and how this choice affects their work. They also discussed the challenges of working with these indicators and what they did to overcome their limitations.

5. Online certificate in Food Security: Assessment and Action

FAO and the Open University of Catalonia are now offering a fully accredited, online certificate in Food Security: Assessment and Action. The four month course starts on 21 March 2012.

The course costs 1345 euros but The EC/FAO Programme on Information Systems to Improve Food Security Decision Making in European Neighborhood Policy (ENP) East Area will consider supporting scholarships for applicants from Armenia, Azerbaijan, Georgia and Moldova. Applications should be sent by 3 March 2012 to information-for-action@fao.org.

7. External event: Hidden Hunger: From Assessment to Solutions

From 6-9 March, 2013, the University of Hohenheim in Stuttgart, Germany will be hosting a congress on Hidden Hunger. Discussions and presentations will focus on issues such as the assessment of hidden hunger, reasons and consequences of hidden hunger, solutions and future perspectives, and more.
