National Nutrition Advocacy Meeting

The Food Security Information for Action Programme, in collaboration with UNICEF and WHO, supports national institutions concerned with food and nutrition in developing a strategic framework for the formulation and implementation of nutrition related activities.
In this context, a National Nutrition Advocacy Meeting was organized in Vientiane, Lao PDR on 4 May, 2006 at the Don Chanh Palace Hotel.
Meeting Objectives:

Strengthen the awareness among decision-makers, line ministries and mass organizations of malnutrition and other nutritional problems in Lao PDR and the importance of urgently addressing these issues to reach the goals set forth in the National Growth and Poverty Eradication Strategy (NGPES) and the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs);

Mobilize support and directions for the development of the National Nutrition Policy and Strategy to improve nutrition; and
|
|
Strengthen the coordination and cooperation with all concerned ministries, agencies and organizations in order to improve nutritional status of the Lao people and contribute to poverty reduction |
Next steps
Next steps include the organization of a Write-shop in Thalat in Vientiane Province in July for the
development of the National Nutrition Policy and Strategy (
NNPS), with support from the National Institute of Nutrition in Vietnam and from Mahidol University in Thailand. Mahidol University will specifically support the Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry in integrating agriculture and food-based approaches into the document.
Three dissemination workshops will then be organized in the country to present and discuss the NNPS and its implementation.
