Moldova

Programme Activities
Harmonizing Veterinary Hygiene and Quality Control Legislation with EU Standards
In order to continue exporting livestock products to neighbouring Romania and therefore access the huge EU market, the Republic of Moldova has aimed at harmonizing its veterinary hygiene and quality control legislation and practices with EU standards. This includes developing emergency management plans for major trans-boundary diseases such as foot-and-mouth disease (FMD).
Considerable technical input was required to identify the most cost-effective and feasible approaches for setting up the necessary health and quality assurance systems. The programme also helped the government set up an Animal Registry - including providing the necessary equipment and organizing training courses for veterinarians.
These activities are expected to have a strong impact on the ability of the country to export livestock products to the European Union and other developed countries.
Training in Food Security Analysis Using Household Budget Surveys
The Household Budget Survey is a key source of information for food security and poverty analysis because it provides the government with complete information on food consumption. In September 2006, a training workshop on national food security assessment based on the 2005 Household Budget survey was held. Food security experts from the National Bureau of Statistics and the Ministry of Agriculture were trained in preparing data files and received assistance in data processing, statistical estimation and in using report writing tools.
The methodology of and results from the analysis were captured in the final paper “Monitoring Food Insecurity Statistics based on 2003 and 2006 HBS” which was presented at the Fourth International Conference of Agricultural Statistics (ICAS 4) in Beijing. The paper also provides useful information for assessing and evaluating the impacts of food policies during the period 2003-2006.
