From the WWW to the Classroom : EC-FAO e-learning materials used to train food security specialists at the University of KwaZulu-Natal
March 13, 2008
The University of KwaZulu-Natal (UKZN) in South Africa is a hub of activity for work in Food Security. The University’s African Centre for Food Security (ACFS) conducts professional training and trans-disciplinary research to establish, support and sustain:
- a critical mass of personnel; as well as
- a network of collaborating institutions and organisations to lead effective food security policy and practice across the sub-continent.
The EC-FAO Programme has contributed to the work of the ACFS by providing e-learning and training materials to support the course entitled “Food Security and Vulnerability Monitoring and Measurement” offered from 25 February to 7 March 2008. WFP and the FAO-FIVIMS Programme also participated in delivering the course.
Course Objectives
The course aimed at building the analytical capacity of vulnerability assessment and analysis (VAA) practitioners in the SADC region and is part of ACFS’s longer-term capacity building strategy.
It provided an overview of the different methods, tools and indicators used for food security monitoring and measurement. Participants also learned best practices for reporting their findings and communicating their recommendations to policy makers.
Topics Covered
The EC/FAO food security training materials were used to enhance the course in the areas related to:
- food security information systems and networks;
- reporting food security information;
- availability assessment and analysis;
- baseline food security and vulnerability assessments;
- livelihoods assessment and analysis; and
- nutritional status assessment and analysis.
