1. 1.02 billion people hungry

New FAO estimates show that the number of hungry people in the world will reach an all-time high in 2009, largely as a result of the ongoing global economic crisis. (19 June 2009)

2. The Next Big Thing for Climate Change?
Tapping the Soil's Huge Potential as a Carbon Sink

Steadily increasing levels of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere is one of the main reasons for global warming. What few people realize is that soil has a tremendous untapped potential to re-absorb and store carbon dioxide. Indeed, the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) has said that soil carbon sequestration has the greatest potential for mitigating the effects of global warming.
