1. How do you think beyond food aid in a conflict?

A new book, based on case studies from the DRC, Sudan and Somalia, asks if long-term food security is ever adequately considered in crises, and if food aid is supplied as an automatic default response.

2. New Book and Seminar: Beyond Relief: Food Security in Protracted Crisis

This seminar, based on six in-depth case studies from Somalia, Sudan and the Democratic Republic of Congo, will provide insights on opportunities for bridging the gap between emergency relief and longer term developmental approaches. The event, which launches a new book called Beyond Relief: Food Security in Protracted Crises, aims to shift current thinking on how best to support food security in protracted crises.

Beyond Relief: Food Security in Protracted Crises edited by Luca Alinovi, Guenter Hemrich and Luca Russo (FAO) is published by Practical Action Publishing (ISBN 987-185339-660-1, £17.95, paperback).

3. Integrated Food Security Phase Classification (IPC) Manual Version 1.1 (in French and English)

Thanks to lessons learned using the IPC in many countries and after extensive technical consultations, the IPC Technical Manual has been revised.

New IPC Maps for many countries including Burundi, the DRC, Kenya, Uganda and Somalia have been published. See:
http://www.ipcinfo.org/news.php

Note: The Integrated Food Security Phase Classification (IPC) is a standardized tool that aims at providing a “common currency” for classifying food security. Using a common scale, which is comparable across countries, will make it easier for donors, agencies and governments to identify priorities for intervention before they become catastrophic.

6. Using Food Security Information for Decision Making in Haiti

In November 2007, staff from Haiti's Coordination Nationale de Sécurité Alimentaire (CNSA) received training aimed at improving their information products.
