Assessment of Early Warning Systems on Food Security in the Greater Horn of Africa and the Synthesis and Consolidation of three Regional Assessments

To obtain a clear understanding of the efficiency and effectiveness of existing food security early warning systems in Southern Africa in order to improve food availability and access, as well as to ensure adequate nutritional quality.
The recommendations aim at leading to actionable programmes. With this objective in mind, a
synthesis report integrating the findings, conclusions and recommendations of the three regional reports has been prepared.
A final workshop was organised to review the synthesis report and agree on best practices for programmes aimed at strengthening early warning systems in Africa.
Sorties
- critical assessment of major food security early warning system activities in the Greater Horn of Africa;
- recommendations including alternatives (technical, institutional, financial) for enhancing the early warning capacity of nations in the Greater Horn of Africa and associated regional organisations;
- synthesis report of the three regional assessment reports:
- a regional workshop to agree on best practices for defining actionable programmes aimed at strengthening early warning systems in Africa.
