Programme Activities
Support to SIFSIA: Tools and Policy Analysis
Several of the food security analysis tools and food security policy frameworks promoted by the Programme have been adopted by the Sudan Institutional Capacity Programme: Food Security Information for Action (SIFSIA) programme. The EC FAO Food Security Programme has also provided technical assistance to the government in formulating National Programmes for Food Security in both the North and South.
Support to the National Household and Health Survey
The Household and Health Survey is a nationwide survey launched by the State of Sudan. It assesses household demographics and the health conditions of women and children. In Southern Sudan, two additional modules, aimed at households and communities, were added to get a baseline of the food security status of the population.
Survey experts from FAO worked with WFP, the US Census Bureau, UNICEF and the Southern Sudan Center of Statistics to prepare and pilot the questionnaire and train enumerators. Results from the survey have been used by WFP in a baseline report which will be used for monitoring progress in achieving food security.

Analytical Study on Food Security Policy Benchmarking
A study called “Food Security Policies and Programmes in Kassala State” has been prepared with the Overseas Development Institute (ODI). It aims at contributing a methodology of reference for benchmarking food security policies, especially at the state level. It also aims at identifying a series of indicators that could favour a pro-food security orientation in sectoral policies and public investment.
CountrySTAT Training
CountrySTAT promotes easy access to and exchange of national and international food security statistics by harmonizing national data collections. Five experts from Sudan received advanced training at FAO Headquarters, where they also had a chance to exchange experiences with Regional counterparts.

Statistics in Applied Climatology (SIAC) Training Course
Three participants from Sudan particpated in a three month training course called "
Statistics in Applied Climatology (SIAC)" run online by the University of Reading. The course gives people working with climatic data the skills they need to use historical datasets effectively. As weather is a crucial factor behind variability in food production, the training ensures that staff from the national food security information systems will be able to produce relevant outputs that will allow end-users to make better decisions regarding food security, agricultural planning and disaster management.
