Résumé

A National Workshop on Crop Yield Forecasting (CYF) was organized on 28 April 2008 by the Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry (MAF) with support from the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO).

The seminar followed previous EC-FAO Programme activities aimed at strengthening Crop Yield Forecasting in the Lao PDR. It brought together representatives from the main government institutions, the World Food Programme (WFP) and the local European Commission (EC) office.

Opening speeches were given by the Deputy Director of Permanent Secretary Office, MAF and the FAO Representative in Lao PDR. Two national experts presented the main achievements from the last two years. A senior expert from FAO gave a presentation on experiences and lessons learned on building capacity in crop forecasting from other countries.

Conclusions included:
- the need to further develop collaboration between ministries especially for sharing and using data;
- the need to improve data quality; and
- the importance of political support to ensure sustainability.

Objectifs

The objectives of the workshop were to:

- present progress made in crop yield forecasting, after 2 years of support from the EC/FAO Food Security Programme (including developing a crop yield forecasting model; training two national experts in CYF; publishing agro-meteorological newsletters);

- raising awareness of the potential of crop yield forecasting for informing policies; and

- discussing additional support required to implement a sustainable crop yield forecasting system in the Lao PDR.
