Summary

This two-week training course was jointly organized by the Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries (MAFF) and the Ministry of Water Resources and Meteorology (MoWRAM), with support from the EC/FAO Food Security Programme, to strengthen crop forecasting in Cambodia.

Two Cambodian experts - who previously attended a three month training course in crop forecasting in Rome in 2006/07 - conducted the training.

The training course aimed at building a critical mass of expertise in crop forecasting in the two ministries mentioned above. It should also result in stronger collaboration between them in sharing and analyzing data. This has been recognized as a key condition for improving data quality and crop forecasting in Cambodia

The training was very practical. Trainers introduced the software package and focused on exercises, using time series crop data - from 1994-2007 - from twenty four provinces. It also used climate data from 1990–2007 from twenty stations. The data included rainfall, maximum and minimum temperatures.

Target Audience

Six government staff from the department of planning and statistics (MAFF) and the department of meteorology (MoWRAM)

Objectives

The training aimed at ensuring sufficient capacity within the two ministries to produce crop forecasts.

Its immediate objectives were to:
- introduce AgrometShell and other crop forecasting software packages; and
- exchange views on how to improve crops yield forecasting in Cambodia.
