Summary

The International Demonstration Centre (IDC) on food security and consumption statistics came into operation in November 2006. A policy analyst from the Ministry of Agriculture, a senior statistician from the Palestinian Bureau of Statistics and a FIVIMS econometrist participated in the one month on-the-job training held at FAO headquarters from 29 November to 21 December 2006.

An assessment of food security based on food consumption statistics derived from the 2005 Palestinian Expenditures and Consumption Survey (PCES) using the Food Security Statistics Module (FSSM) was performed. A draft report was presented at the end of the training course on the results obtained at national and sub national levels and includes the following issues of food consumption:

- Magnitude of food deprivation
- Food consumption and expenditures:
- Dietary energy consumption and unit costs
- Monetary value of food consumed and share of food consumption
in total consumption expenditure
- Share of food consumption from different sources in total
consumption
- Inequality in food access due to income
- Dietary diversity and sources of calories (carbohydrates, proteins and fats)
- Food poverty

A National Seminar on Food Consumption Statistics (NSFCS) was held on 26 March in Ramallah, with representatives from thePA, NGOs and UN agencies. The NSFCS was organized by FAO at the Grand Park Hotel in Ramallah and aimed at technically reviewing the methodology used and validating food security statistics.
