International Workshop on simple tools for measuring household access to food and dietary diversity

OVERVIEW

Summary

An international meeting for representatives from participating EC-FAO programme countries took place in Kenya in March 2007. Discussions centered on the adaptation and potential uses of three simple monitoring tools for assessing household level food access and dietary diversity:

- the Household Food Insecurity Access Scale developed by the Food and Nutrition Technical Assistance Project (FANTA)

- the Household Dietary Diversity Score (adapted from FANTA); and

- an Individual Dietary Diversity Score for adult women.

Nairobi, Kenya

Target Audience

Participants from countries involved in EC-FAO nutrition activities (national coordinators and government representatives from key ministries collaborating with FAO on the activity).

Objectives

Bring together potential users of the three monitoring tools to:
- refine methods for adapting them to specific contexts; and
- identify appropriate settings for their use.

These tools may be included in:
- national information systems on food security and poverty
- monitoring and evaluation activities
- early warning and
- emergency phase classifications
to provide outcome measures of inadequate food access and consumption.
