Adaptation and use of monitoring tools for assessing household level food access and dietary diversity

Resumen

National consultants, with technical assistance from the FAO Nutrition Division, have adapted and pre-tested three simple monitoring tools for assessing household level food access and consumption:

- the Household Food Insecurity Access Scale developed by the Food and Nutrition Technical Assistance Project (FANTA);

- the Household Dietary Diversity Score (adapted from FANTA); and

- an Individual Dietary Diversity Score for adult women.

Adaptation is done through interviews with key informants and focus groups and pre-testing is done through household interviews. Adaptation includes translation into local language. The activity is conducted in two distinct areas of a country. Once adapted, the tools can be used in early warning systems, as monitoring indicators for information systems, and for evaluating strategies and programmes.
