Workshop: Supply Utilization Accounts and Food Balance Sheets Methodology

Résumé

The overall objective of the workshop was to provide a review of Supply Utilization Accounts and Food Balance Sheets Methodology concepts. It also involved practical training in compiling FBS statistics, with particular emphasis on the problems identified in the participating countries during  review missions. The workshop achieved several results:

Joint FAO/national institutions achievements

  • Understanding of the clear differences in FBS methodology and steps required to harmonize methodologies.
  • A commitment from ESS and partner institutions to resolve the main differences in FAOSTAT and national FBS results.
  • Agreed steps for ESS Division and national institutions to improve bilateral relations and future data exchange.


Workshop national institutions

  • A clear understanding of FAO’s SUA/FBS methodology, delivered by presentations during the workshop, and technical papers in Russian.
  • Agreement on the timing and location of one-week study tour, and a one week visit to countries by FAO international consultant.
  • Electronic pen drives supplied to countries participants containing workshop presentations, a complete set of FAO SUA/FBS methodology papers, a copy of FAO’s Excel SUA/FBS model, and download of FAOSTAT data including underlying nutritional values and technical conversion factors.


FAO ESS/ESA Divisions

  • A clear understanding of the main surveys and data collection within each country.
  • Constructive feedback on ways to improve the quality of FAOSTAT data.

The workshop was attended by ten participants, senior specialists and statisticians from Armenia, Azerbaijan, Lithuania, Moldova and FAO Headquarters
