Analysis of Household Resilience Using Stata

Résumé

The Agricultural Development Economics (ESA) Division of FAO, through the EC-FAO Food Security Information for Action Programme, has been pioneering the concept of resilience in food security literature. One of the main goals of resilience analysis has been to help policy makers understand the food security situation by measuring the household capabilities to absorb shocks.

As applied to the household specific context, resilience is defined as “The ability of the household to keep with a certain level of well-being (e.g. food security) withstanding shocks and stresses, depending on: i) the options available to the household to make a living and, ii) its ability to manage risks”.

In the FAO methodology, resilience is considered a latent variable defined according to four building blocks: income and food access (IFA); assets (A; access to basic services (ABS); and social safety nets (SSN).

Furthermore, stability (S) and adaptive capacity (AC) are two other dimensions that cut across these building blocks and account for households’ capacity to respond and adapt to shocks.
