Monitoring Tools for Assessing Food Access and Dietary Diversity
The Nutrition Division of FAO, under the EC/FAO Programme on Food Security Information for Action, provided training and technical assistance in adapting simple household food and nutrition security monitoring tools and analyzing results in several countries. The tools are the Household Food Insecurity Access Scale (HFIAS), developed by FANTA and which measures food access, and dietary diversity scores which assess food consumption at household and individual levels. Malawi was one of the 6 countries (Malawi, Kenya, Mozambique, West Bank, Burkina Faso and Somalia) where this activity took place.
Adaptation, translation and pre-testing of survey tools was conducted in Mangochi District and Mwanza District in July, 2006. The three survey tools tested were: the FANTA-developed Household Dietary Diversity Score (HDD); the FANTA-developed Household Food Insecurity Access Scale (HFIAS); and an individual dietary diversity score (IDD). This reports presents the results resulting from the field based word.
