12 Nov 2010
, Tbilisi
, Asia - Caucasus, Georgia

Summary

The workshop was jointly organized by the Ministry of Agriculture (the MoA) and FAO. It was organized as part of the support provided by the Programme to promote farmer cooperation.

Its main objective is to support the formulation of policies to enhance cooperation among small-scale family farmers. This activity complements ongoing support provided by EU to the MoA in formulating the Agricultural Strategy.

The workshop gave participants the opportunity to understand and discuss different approaches to promote farmer cooperation, especially the value chain approach. The workshop raised awareness about:

  • the importance of making small farmers more actively involved in markets for the development of agriculture. This includes requires promoting cooperation;
  • the need (and expectation from donors) for an increased budget allocation to agriculture.

The workshop also provided a platform for the international donor community and NGOs to stress the importance for developing and implementing policies promoting cooperation among small farmers.
