National workshops on monitoring tools for assessing household level food access and dietary diversity

Summary

A national workshop was held in each country in November 2006 to discuss the following tools:

- the Household Food Insecurity Access Scale developed by the Food and Nutrition Technical Assistance Project (FANTA);

- the Household Dietary Diversity Score (adapted from FANTA); and

- an Individual Dietary Diversity Score for adult women.

Results of the field adaptations were presented and potential uses of the tools were discussed.

Objectives

Objective: Present the results of the activity and give recommendations for integrating the tools into on-going and future food security information systems.

These tools may be included as outcome measures of inadequate food access and consumption in national information systems on food security and poverty, in monitoring and evaluation activities, early warning, and phase classification systems for detecting emergencies.
