Study tour in Arlon, Belgium: Improving crop yield forecasting

A one week study tour on crop yield forecasting was organized for 2 senior staff from Armstatehydromet Service and the Ministry of Agriculture of Armenia in Arlon, Belgium, in collaboration with the University of Liege (Belgium). The study tour (12-17 December 2011) was organized at the end of a one-month training course for 2 staff from Armstatehydromet on improving agrometeorological forecasting in Armenia.

The main results of the study tour were:

  • results achieved by the two trainees that participate in the one month crop forecasting training were reviewed;
  • METOP NDVI images were integrated into crop forecasting models;
  • solutions were found to existing problems for producing reliable crop forecasts;
  • the proposed Agromet Bulletin was revised and there was an agreement on its final layout;
  • the agro page structure and design were discussed with specialists;
  • a scientific article was prepared to document the results of the assistance provided to Armenia on the use of crop forecasting techniques.

The main objective of the study tour was to:

  • review the activities undertaken under the Programme’s agromet component; and
  • finalise all pending issues for improving crop forecasting in Armenia in the context of the assistance provided by the EC/FAO Programme.
