29 Sep 2010
, Chisinau
, Asia - Caucasus, Moldova

Summary

The Workshop was organized by the Ministry of Agriculture and Food Industry (MAFI) and FAO. It is one of a series of activities aimed at establishing a Market Information Center (MIC) in Moldova.

 The Vice Minister of Agriculture welcomed the participants and emphasized the importance of improving the analytical skills of MAFI staff, specifically of the marketing and policy monitoring departments. He stressed MAFI’s role in providing the right policy environment for the development of agriculture - especially the small holder sector. He emphasised the need for sustainable long term policies.

A method for prioritizing data needs for the Market Information Center (MIC), based on value chain analyses, was presented at the workshop. At the end of the Workshop, participants decided to adopt a value chain approach as a guiding principle for prioritizing the data needs of the MIC and as the basis for policy analysis.

Objectives

The objective of the Workshop was to present value chain approaches for prioritizing data needs to support policy-making processes – with an emphasis on smallholder based agricultural development.
The Workshop also contributed to:

  • Raising awareness about constraints to smallholder agricultural development and potential solutions;
  • Building  capacity in using tools to identify key constraints and the prioritize information required for policy analysis;
  • Initiating a process in which MAFI uses the tools to identify key constraints and information needs. This will help ensure that the Market Information Centre produces data which is relevant for policy analysis.
