Azerbaijan Food Security and Agriculture Highlights, January–March 2012

6 Jul 2012, Asia - Caucasus, Azerbaijan
  • Agricultural production is expected to be higher in 2012 than in 2011 for all main crops. Wheat production continues to increase and self-sufficiency is expected in 2015.
  • The prevalence of poverty continued to decline from 9.1% in 2010 to 7.6% in 2011. The steady reduction of poverty in the 2000s is attributed to strong economic growth and increasing minimal wages and social transfers.
  • Food prices remained stable between December 2011 and March 2012. They were on average 4% higher in January–March 2012 than during the same period of 2011.
  • Cereal imports in January-March 2012 were 12% less than in the same period of 2011, but slightly above 2007/2011 average, while the import bill decreased by about 30%, reflecting declining prices on international markets.

The “Improved Global Governance for Hunger Reduction” programme is funded by the European Union with additional resources provided by the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO). The programme is managed by FAO and collaborates with the International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD) and the World Food Programme (WFP)”
