Georgia Food Security and Agriculture Highlights, January–March 2012

  • The population under the poverty threshold decreased between 2009 and 2011, from 9.9% in 2009 to 9.7% in 2010 and 9.2% in 2011. Social assistance decreased accordingly.
  • The period of January–March was distinguished by low food prices comparing to the same period of 2011.
  • Cereal production increased by 66% in 2011 compared to 2010, according to preliminary data from Geostat.
  • Cereal imports during the first quarter of 2012 were almost four times higher than the quantities registered during the same period of 2011.  

The “Improved Global Governance for Hunger Reduction” programme is funded by the European Union with additional resources provided by the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO). The programme is managed by FAO and collaborates with the International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD) and the World Food Programme (WFP)”
