Republic of Moldova

The Programme in the Republic of Moldova supports the government’s efforts to develop the smallholder agricultural sector. This will help increase productivity and incomes, and reduce food insecurity.
Poverty is a main cause of food insecurity in Moldova. In spite of major progress in recent years, 26 percent of the population was living in poverty in 2007. The global economic crisis threatens progress.
The Programme is implemented together with the Ministry of Agriculture and Food Industry (MAFI) and the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS), in cooperation with relevant partners’ initiatives.
The Republic of Moldova country programme operates as part of the regional EC/FAO Programme on information systems to improve food security decision-making in the European Neighborhood Policy East Area.
